Arnold Palmer and his caddie, Creamy Carolan, discuss their options on the fifteenth tee during the final round.
Palmer chipped ten feet past the hole, missed his par-saver by an inch and, when he went to tap that in, stubbed his putter and never touched the ball. No one in the world knew heâd done it, but Palmer called the stroke on himself, and before Barber attempted his three-footer for par, Arnie said, âI made five.â
Barber was so shocked that he missed his putt and made bogey, yet he still increased his lead back to three strokes thanks to Palmerâs double-bogey. âI didnât see him miss that putt,â Barber recalled. âI couldnât believe it. In my wildest imagination, I wouldnât have known he had done it if he hadnât spoken up.â
Palmer didnât quit. He made birdie at sixteen, and when Barber pushed his drive into trouble at seventeen, the door was open for a miracle Palmer rally. Instead, Barber rifled a 2-iron into the fairway just short of the green. âIt was one of the best shots of my life,â he said. He then wedged to three feet to save par. With a two-stroke cushion, he calmly ripped a drive down the middle at eighteen, hit a 6-iron to three feet and cautiously two-putted for his winning par.
At the closing ceremony, despite the bitter taste of defeat still on his palate, Palmer told the gathered throng, âOak Hill and this town have given the USGA something to hang its hat on. The Senior Open here was the most successful weâve ever had. I only hope they [the USGA] remember that when the time comes.â
Palmer was referring to Oak Hillâs desire to host an Open, for which a decision by the USGA was on the horizon. USGA president James Hand laughed and responded, âDonât worry, weâll remember.â
